Does this sound familiar?

  • Mom’s house has forty years in it and she can’t face the garage.
  • Dad is moving to a smaller place next month and nothing is packed.
  • You live three states away and every phone call ends in a fight about “stuff.”
  • The paperwork, the bills, the appointments. It has quietly gotten to be too much.

None of this means anyone did anything wrong. It means it is time for a steady pair of hands.

How it works

Three steps. You can stop after any of them.

1. A free call

Twenty minutes. You tell Karen what is going on. She tells you what would help, what it costs, and what to do first. Most families call for a parent; that is fine.

2. A visit and a plan

Karen comes to the house, sits at the kitchen table, and asks what matters. You get a written plan and a written estimate. Nothing starts until you say so.

3. The work, at their pace

Room by room, or box by box. You get a short note after every visit, with photos if you want them. Nothing leaves the house without a yes.

How Karen helps

Boxes labeled keep, donate and trash during a sorting visit

Sorting and organizing

One room at a time, at your parent’s pace. Keep, give, sell, let go. Nothing leaves the house without a yes.

Downsizing and moves

From the first floor plan to the last picture hung. Karen packs, labels, manages the movers, and sets up the new place so it feels like home on night one.

Household support

Mail, bills, medication schedules, the calendar. A weekly visit that keeps the small things from becoming big ones.

Life transitions

After a loss, a diagnosis, or a hospital stay. The paperwork, the house, the things that have to be dealt with when nobody has the energy.

Meet Karen

Karen Mills has helped more than 200 Treasure Valley families sort, downsize and move since 2014. She started after moving her own mother out of the family home and realizing nobody tells you how to do it.

She is patient, she is organized, and she has never once told a client to throw something away.

What families say

“I flew in for one weekend. Karen had already done the hard part with Mom, room by room, and Mom was proud of it instead of upset. I did not think that was possible.”

Jennifer, Seattle (mother in Eagle)

“She moved me from four bedrooms to two in nine days. My pictures were on the wall the first night. I slept fine.”

Walt, 81, Meridian

“My brother and I had been arguing about Dad’s house for a year. Karen sat us all down, and by the end of the afternoon we had a plan everyone could live with.”

Mark, Boise

Questions families ask first

Will you make my mother throw things away?

No. Karen has never told a client to throw something away. She helps people decide, and she takes as long as that takes. A lot of people decide they are ready. Some keep everything, and that is a fine outcome too.

What does it cost?

Sorting and household support are $65 an hour. Moves are quoted as a package after Karen has seen both homes. You get a written estimate before anything starts, and you can stop at any time. Pricing is on the services page.

I live out of state. Can I still arrange this?

Most families do. Karen talks with you first, meets your parent when everyone is ready, and sends you a short note with photos after every visit so you always know where things stand.

What happens to the things that go?

Family first. Then donation, consignment or an estate buyer, then recycling, and the dumpster last. Karen knows the donation trucks, the estate buyers and the shredding company, so you do not have to find anyone.

How fast can you start?

Usually within a week for sorting and household support. Moves with a firm date get scheduled around that date. If something urgent has happened, say so on the call.

Is Karen insured?

Yes, insured and bonded, and a member of the National Association of Senior and Specialty Move Managers. She will give you two families to call before you hire her.
