About Karen

Karen Mills, owner of Lighter Living

In 2013 I moved my mother out of the house she had lived in for 46 years. I did it badly. I was rushed, I was tired, and I made her cry over a set of dishes.

Nobody tells you how to do this. So I learned, and in 2014 I started doing it for other families. Eleven years and more than 200 homes later, I still start every job the same way: sitting at the kitchen table, asking what matters.

I have never told a client to throw something away. I have helped a lot of people decide they were ready to.

What working with me is like

  • Your parent is in charge. I work at their pace, not the calendar’s.
  • You get a short note after every visit, with photos if you want them.
  • I know the movers, the estate buyers, the donation trucks and the shredding company. You do not have to find anyone.
  • I am insured and bonded, and I will give you two families to call before you hire me.

Every move starts with a tape measure and a floor plan of the new place.

A little more

I grew up in Nampa and live in Boise with my husband Dave and a very old dog named Rosie. I am a member of the National Association of Senior and Specialty Move Managers and I take their ethics course every year. When I am not in someone’s garage, I am in my own.

The part of the job I like most is the first night in a new place, when the bed is made and the photos are on the nightstand and somebody who was dreading this says, “Oh. It’s fine.”
