What to do first when the move is four weeks away
Four weeks is enough. It is not enough to do it in the wrong order. Here is the order.
Week 1: measure the new place
Before a single box is packed, know what fits. Measure every room and every doorway in the new home. Then walk the old home with a tape measure and a roll of blue tape. Furniture that fits gets a piece of tape. Everything else has a decision to make, and now you know which decisions.
Week 2: the keep pile first
Sort what is going, not what is leaving. Pack the “keep” items room by room and label every box with the room it goes to in the new home, not the room it came from. The leftover is what has to be dealt with, and it is much smaller than the house looked.
Week 3: book the trucks
Movers for the keep pile. A donation pickup for the giveaway pile. An estate buyer or a hauler for what is left. Three appointments, three days apart, in that order. The house empties itself.
Week 4: the first-night box
Sheets, towels, medications, the coffee maker, phone chargers, one week of clothes, the photos that go on the nightstand. It rides in the car, not the truck. The first night in a new home decides how the next month feels.
